Flash? Well perhaps not today

OK, so here we are. Yes, well… almost. Not this time. Nor this time. Oh dear. One more go? Goodness! Bother and blast (or whatever takes your fancy). Really!!!!!????? So here I am in the middle of my favourite hunting ground, the last of this season’s critters hopping and buzzing happily in the warm autumn sun. But so far not a single image. And it’s all your fault! Yes you, all you wonderful, awesome, incredibly skilled macro photographers whose amazing flash images I see scrolling past my eyes day after day. I just HAVE to give it a try I thought, as I jumped online and ordered my Godox V860IIIO flash and Cygnustech diffuser. They came, I assembled, I read the instructions and pushed buttons here and there. And off I went jauntily out in the field, feeling just a trifle too conspicuous with this enormous white funnel thing pitching and yawing in the not-so-gentle autumn breeze. Great! A hoverfly basking in the sun… no way, a beetle on that leaf then… oops, better luck with that butterfly, not a chance… it would be nice to try that ant. I randomly push unfamiliar buttons as I blunder through the hawthorn scrub, trying in vain to wrestle all that unfamiliar superstructure into submission, to the undoubted amusement of the local entomofauna in rapid dematerialisation. OK, enough is enough, at least for now. Off comes that enormous white funnel thing, off comes the flash… a sigh of relief. Once again it’s just me, my lens and all that delightful autumn light to play with. And this is the result.
