Wherever I go, I’m known (if at all) for my nature and outdoor photography. Mostly macro, some wildlife a smatter of landscapes and little else. But I have a deep and intimate photography secret… are you ready? The truth is, the genre that really attracts me is a far cry from ants, ladybirds and mountain sunsets. The photos that stop me in my tracks when I’m scrolling through social media are, wait for it, street images. I adore the light and shade of urban streets, the colours, the textures. I’m fascinated by those public and private moments, the movement, the interactions, the contrasts. So why don’t I go out to haunt those city highways and byways, eye and camera at the ready? It’s simple. My shyness. I have tried time and time again, but inescapably, the moment I go to raise my camera to my eye, finger on the shutter release, I freeze. Displacement behaviour. I fumble. Take a picture of my feet, the sky, a dustbin… anything that says… but no, of course, I’m not looking at you, you’re not that amazing subject I was hoping to immortalise. Goodness no. But I will persist, when the place and time feel right. Above all, when my energy levels are high enough to maintain a level two force field around my sensibilities. Who knows, maybe one day. But in the meantime, here are a couple of images from a night out on the town in Cuneo in Italy’s Piedmont region. I almost did it!
