Zen and the late summer butterflies

The subtitle of this post should be “Mission Impossible”. Over these last few days, I’ve been trying to run before learning to walk, but that’s nothing new for me. On one hand, I’ve been rushing around, bouncing with enthusiasm, trying out all the exciting things I can do with my new OM system gear (in this case, insects in flight with Pro Capture). On the other, it’s really not the best time of year, the butterflies are few and far between and the vegetation is mostly chaotic and untidy. Not to be defeated, I’ve spent hours blissfully soaking up the last of the late summer sun to the background soundtrack of rutting red deer just a little above me on the flanks of the mountain. A pretty low success rate to be honest, but actually it doesn’t seem to matter much. After my initial bouncing had died down, it all became very zen. Just waiting for the “right” butterfly to land on the “right” flower (which it rarely did), then fingers crossed I hadn’t messed up the settings, between buttons and dials, custom modes and… well you get the picture (which is more than I did most of the time!). This is the one I like best of the bunch. Could I have done better? Without a doubt. Will I do better? I sincerely hope so. But for now, I’m satisfied. Below, two photos just to illustrate my chaotic abandoned meadow and my view while meditating on all the things I should probably be doing, but happily am not.
